The World Mission Society Church of God has announced that on Sunday, 15 December 75 volunteers carried out an impactful carbon reduction activity by planting 50 Celtis trees in Fairway Street, Ruimsig, Johannesburg.
Supported by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo in Region C, the group says that it wrapped up its environmental protection activities in its 60th anniversary year under the World Environmental Day theme: ‘Desertification, Drought and Land Resilience’ by sowing the seeds of hope in combating climate crisis and positively contributing to environmental protection.
Local Councillor Jacques Hoon and Region C Councillor Ralf Bitkau, who also attended the voluntary activity, thanked the volunteers.
“Thank you so much for coming and for the good work you keep doing for the community. Ralf has been telling everyone from here to Cape Town about the work you have been doing at Golden Harvest Park and all over,” says Hoon.
Climate crisis is an urgent challenge that humanity, who lives on the earth as the foundation of life, must collectively address. Accelerated global warming due to plastic waste and desertification threatens human survival, says the World Mission Society Church of God.
This activity is part of the ‘Hope Challenge,’ a global social contribution initiative by the Church of God in celebration of its 60th anniversary. It aims to bring hope to the global community facing crises such as climate disasters, earthquakes, famines, wars and various social issues, says the group.
The group says that the ‘Hope Challenge’ addresses six key areas:
- responding to climate change
- alleviating poverty and hunger
- supporting education
- improving health and well-being
- creating sustainable and safe societies, and
- promoting peace inclusion and solidarity.
The World Mission Society Church of God concludes that this aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and countries worldwide, including Korea, the United Kingdom, Peru, the Philippines and Australia, are participating.
