The works, which began on Victoria Road on Tuesday, April 22, came just one week after Wales and West roadworks on the adjoining Bath Road caused 10 days of queues through Old Town.
These new works, also carried out by Wales and West Utilities, are to replace a pipe underneath the busy commuter road, and are expected to last nine days.
Traffic on Victoria Road and Prospect Place has been subject to temporary traffic lights and a single-file system.
But residents say the delays feel ‘never-ending’ as traffic is forced to queue through the town and over roundabouts, causing delays in all directions.

Delays in Old Town (Image: Newsquest) “I queued all the way up Victoria Road trying to get home earlier,” one motorist from Old Town told the Swindon Advertiser.
“Just when I made it to the top of the hill and thought I was in the clear, I then had to queue behind some more stop signs on Bath Road while they cleaned up the potholes.
“It’s a nightmare for the residents living here. With traffic already queuing on the hill, it seems like a terrible time to add more hold-ups to the mix.

“It was only recently they had all the delays over on Newport Street too. I know they’re important, but it does feel like the roadworks in Old Town are never-ending right now.”
Video footage captured on Bath Road shows workers holding lanes of traffic with ‘stop’ and ‘go’ signs on Thursday, April 24, while patches of road outside Bath Road Methodist Church are repaired.

A sign, left by the utility company, reads: “Sorry for any inconvenience while we upgrade your gas pipes.”
However, Old Town residents will be relieved to hear that following the pipe upgrades, there are no further roadworks planned for the area until early June.
On June 2, 2025, further pipework is scheduled to be carried out on Bath Road and Goddard Avenue.
